WHO WE ARE
Love God. Love Each Other.
Riverview United Presbyterian Church is a community oriented, inter-generational, multi-cultural, and LGBTQIA+ affirming congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in the Observatory Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh's North Side. We are rooted in the Presbyterian tradition. We sing hymns, spirituals, and praise songs. We pray, study, and wrestle with scripture. We value faith, and we encourage critical thinking and deep questions. We are people of spirit, mind, and body. We try to use all of that we are in our life together. Most importantly, we try to celebrate the grace of God in everything we do. In life and in worship, we are people of great hope and great joy.
We believe that the Kingdom of God is a beautiful and diverse mosaic of God's people, and that the Church should be too. God has given you life, and you are welcome here. Whoever you are, whatever you have walked through in life, we truly believe that God in Christ is your hope. And you are welcome, encouraged, and invited to seek that hope here. We believe the Church should be a safe and inclusive space for all people to find, and dwell in the presence of God.
We believe God has called us to love our neighbors. And we believe that to love our neighbors is to serve our neighbors. Mission and ministries of compassion are a big part of our community.
We are a neighborhood church, and the Observatory Hill neighborhood plays a big part in our identity and in the ministry that we do. We are located adjacent to Riverview Park, the Allegheny Observatory, SS. Syril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary, and just a short walk from Perry High School and the Observatory Hill business district. A large part of our congregation lives in the community surrounding the church, and care for our neighbors, and our community, is central to the mission of our congregation. The Riverview Thrift Store has been serving our community since 1978, and proceeds from the thrift store help fund the community food bank, which has operated out of Riverview United Presbyterian Church since 1981. Currently, our Food Bank serves the Perry North (which includes Observatory Hill), Perry South, and Northview Heights neighborhoods of Pittsburgh's North Side.
We truly believe that mission and worship go hand in hand. Christ calls us to embrace the love of God and the love of our neighbors in all we do. Jesus tells us, "Come to me all you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) We believe that, in Christ, we find our center and our rest.
